As we reported earlier, the Chief of Naval Operations’ just-released launched Navigation Plan 2022 sees the U.S Navy’s fleet of 2040s as together with “a bunch of manned, unmanned and optionally-manned platforms working beneath, on, and above the seas.”

The Navy is placing massive bucks into researching the big unmanned floor vessel (LUSV) elements of that host. On Friday, it awarded six firms contracts for “continued research of a giant unmanned floor vessel.”

Right here’s who was awarded what:

  • Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc., Pascagoula, Miss., was awarded a $13,071,106 firm-fixed-price modification to a beforehand awarded contract for continued research of an LUSV. WHAT IS AN LUSV, ANYWAY?

So, what’s the Navy’s concept of a giant unmanned floor vessel? In accordance with a Congressional Analysis Service (CRS) report up to date July 26:

“The Navy envisions LUSVs as being 200 ft to 300 ft in size and having full load displacements of 1,000 tons to 2,000 tons, which might make them the scale of a corvette. (i.e., a ship bigger than a patrol craft and smaller than a frigate). The Navy needs LUSVs to be low-cost, high-endurance, reconfigurable ships with ample capability for carrying numerous modular payloads—significantly anti-surface warfare (ASuW) and strike payloads, which means principally anti-ship and land-attack missiles. Every LUSV might be outfitted with a vertical launch system (VLS) with 16 to 32 missile-launching tubes. Though known as UVs, LUSVs is likely to be extra precisely described as optionally or flippantly manned ships, as a result of they may typically have just a few onboard crew members, significantly within the nearer time period because the Navy works out LUSV enabling applied sciences and operational ideas. Below the Navy’s FY2023 five-year (FY2023-FY2027) shipbuilding plan, procurement of LUSVs via the Navy’s shipbuilding account is programmed to start in FY2025.”
