DOWindy Day 1


The DOWindy cruise kicked off with the crew in excessive spirits (Fig. 1) and with superb climate (Fig. 2).  Our ship, the RV Celtic Voyager, did a lot of the work on the primary day, which entailed attending to the primary research space about 20 nm offshore.  It’s wonderful how the swell picks up as quickly as you move the Aaron Islands and commerce the shelter of Galway Bay for the open Atlantic.

We share these waters with some fuzz-challenged mammals; so, as soon as we had been on station, Jessica began an official look ahead to seals, dolphins, and whales.  She’s an authorized Marine Mammal Observer, which implies it’s her job to be careful for any wildlife which may be negatively impacted by our tools. 

As soon as every little thing was clear, we began surveying the seabed utilizing a “sparker” system.  The sparker system is a seismic sub-bottom profiler, which implies it lets us use the geophysical principals of acoustic refraction and reflection to disclose sediment traits which can be in any other case hidden extraordinarily effectively under all of the ocean water.  It requires contact with the ocean water, so it will get towed behind the ship on a small catamaran (Fig. 3).  We’ll keep up all evening and monitor this survey because it collects information and tomorrow, we’ll begin really sampling the seabed sediment.
